Memory Card

A memory card is used to store files, media, and other data in a portable device. Most of them use flash memory, which allows you to save and erase small bits of data at a time. Also, memory cards don't need power to keep files in storage, so you don't lose your data when you turn off the device.

Types of memory cards

Memory cards come in a wide range of formats. Most devices work with only one (occasionally two), and it's important to know which one works with your gadget. Here are some of the more common types:

  • SD (Secure Digital): SD cards are widely used in PDAs and multimedia devices. The original SD was 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm , but recent varieties have downsized the card for more compact devices. The miniSD measures 21.5mm x 20mm x 1.4mm , and the microSD is only 11mm x 15mm x 0.7mm.
  • Memory Stick: Developed by Sony, the Memory Stick is actually a family of memory cards. The smallest, Memory Stick Micro, is around the size of a fingernail, and works with most of Sony's compact devices.
  • CompactFlash: In the age of the ultracompacts, the CF card is one of the bulkiest yet most popular memory card formats. CF cards are capable of large memory capacities-up to 16GB or more-and are ideal for high-end digital cameras and media players.
  • xD-Picture Card: The xD was developed by camera manufacturer Olympus and is used almost exclusively in digital cameras. At 20mm x 25mm x 1.7mm , the xD is one of the smaller formats, but is not as popular as the SD.

Choosing memory cards

Memory cards should have enough storage to store all your files. It's always best to get more than you need, especially if your device has only one slot. For more information on choosing memory cards, visit our website at MemoryCard.
